Model of Crazy Horse sculpture

It isn’t a symbol of the U.S. government. Rather, an enormous sculpture of Crazy Horse rising in South Dakota’s Black Hills represents a defeated nation, the Sioux.

But the Sioux aren’t extinct, unlike some Indian tribes. Moreover, they’re attracting attention by creating a monument even larger than the famous Mount Rushmore. The Crazy Horse Memorial is also more appropriate. After all, it depicts a Native American, rather than four white men who never even visited what is now South Dakota.

Still, there are some people who believe that no mountain should be carved into a giant sculpture. They also question whether a great warrior who was never even photographed would approve of such a thing.

One thing’s certain: Crazy Horse will continue inspiring controversy long after his sculpture is finished.
