United Nations flag

It’s really amazing. The original Ben’s Guide to U.S. Symbols lists so many symbols that relate to war and death. They include memorials to the wars in Vietnam and Korea, as well as the Marine Corps. There’s also Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknowns.

But why is there no mention of symbols of peace and life?

In fact, the creation of the United Nations (UN) may be the greatest gesture of peace in world history. The UN wasn’t created by the United States alone. However, the U.S. is one of five World War II victors (including the People’s Republic of China, France, the United Kingdom and Russia) with permanent veto power. In addition, the UN is headquartered in New York City.

Almost every nation is represented by the UN. This is a reminder that the U.S. itself is home to people from around the world.

Since its creation, the UN has played a major role in preventing wars and reducing bloodshed and human rights abuses. It even has the authority to send armed peacekeepers to troubled regions.

But some people are skeptical. They say the UN really serves the interests of more powerful nations. For example, it didn’t prevent the United States from illegally invading Iraq. In fact, the U.S. government now frequently ignores the UN and has been working to undermine it.

Some say the UN should be abolished. Others hope it springs back, like the bald eagle, our formerly endangered national bird.
